Cohera Medical, a developer of absorbable surgical sealants and adhesives, has reported the initiation of TissuGlu Surgical Adhesive clinical trial in the US to minimize the complications in post-surgery and wound drainage in tummy tuck surgeries.
The clinical study commencement is an important milestone in the history of Covera’s lead product progression, which is heading towards commercialization in the US.
This clinical study will be carried out in 150 patients at six locations in America in order to examine the efficiency of TissuGlu adhesive. TissuGlu is a high-strength and absorbable surgical adhesive for use in large flap surgeries like abdominoplasty and can help to minimize or avoid retention of fluid and the necessities for post-operative drains.
Recently, CE Marking approval was given to the company for TissuGlu adhesive and the company started the sale of products to surgeons and hospitals in Germany during September 2011. Cohera has intended to commercialize the TissuGlu adhesive to the European markets during 2012. Major plastic and reconstructive surgeons have been utilizing TissuGlu adhesive in more than 350 surgical procedures in Germany.
Drain insertion is need for most of the patients, who undergo tummy tuck and other flap procedures, in order to eliminate fluids accumulated at the surgical location, which is below the skin. Insufficient drainage will occur in some cases and additional procedures are needed for the removal of the surplus retention of fluid. TissuGlu adhesive sticks to the tissue flap, which is formed during the procedure, and helps to minimize the accumulation of fluid in the space and the time is reduced for during the drain removal. This adhesive finally results in easy recovery and quickly enables patients to come back to normal activity.
