Novelis, a major provider of rolled aluminum, has inked a multi-year exclusive supply contract to deliver high-quality automotive sheet products to automaker, Jaguar Land Rover.
As per the deal, Novelis will exclusively supply rolled aluminum for use in a variety of Jaguar Land Rover models, thus facilitating the auto maker to achieve its strategy of decreasing vehicle weight and ultimately reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The major aspect of the sole-supplier deal is the recovery and recycling of all Jaguar Land Rover's aluminum scrap by Novelis, thus completing a closed-loop recycling system. Moreover, Novelis aluminum will be utilized in the all-new Range Rover, a first-of-its-kind lightweight all-aluminum body sports utility vehicle.
The deal extends the two-decade old close collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover and Novelis in the advancement of lightweight aluminum technologies for use in the automotive industry, and their partnership on recycling aluminum scrap generated from the automotive production process.
Jaguar Land Rover uses Novelis aluminum in its broad range of products, which include the Jaguar XK, XF, XJ models in addition to the Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, Discovery 4 and Land Rover Defender. Novelis is expanding its global capacity devoted to the automotive industry by more than two times in order to fulfill the growing demand for automotive aluminum sheet from across the world.
Closed-loop systems for procuring back, recovering and recycling aluminum waste produced by customers during manufacturing are a key element of Novelis' long-term strategy of reaching 80% recycled aluminum input by 2020. Novelis has witnessed a 6% increase in the percentage of recycled input to 39% in 2012 from the 2011 value of 33%.
