Outokumpu delivers some 170 tonnes of specialty stainless steel for the construction of new modern headquarters of Qatar Foundation in Education City on the outskirts of Doha, Qatar. Structural sections made out of duplex stainless steel provide needed support for the 57-metre tall cube-shaped building.
Outokumpu supplies rectangular hollow sections and L-profiles manufactured from duplex plate to Eversendai Engineering LLC, who is in charge of delivering the structural package for the new building. Duplex stainless steel was chosen as it provides the required strength for the core of the structure. The hollow structural sections are stainless steel profiles which are manufactured by welding two U-shaped stainless steel profiles together at Outokumpu Plate Service Centre in Degerfors, Sweden.
Structural sections offer a wide range of opportunities for builders to take advantage of the properties of duplex stainless steel where high strength and long service life are required. Duplex stainless steel allows for considerable weight savings where their strength can be utilised in design, which makes it a cost-efficient high-strength steel alternative.
“The Qatar Foundation Headquarters project is a prime example also of the added value services Outokumpu can provide to its customers. The production of the structural sections for this project included various steps from cutting and bending to edge preparation to ensure a smooth installation at the construction site”, says Tobias Larsson from Outokumpu sales company in United Arab Emirates.
The new Qatar Foundation Headquarters building will also include an adjacent 3-4 storey high strategic studies centre which, together with the main headquarters building, sits on a common podium. The building is scheduled for completion in mid-2013.
