Ceram, the international materials technology company, and the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network (Materials KTN), the materials community network, hosted the first UK event around geopolymer technology* on Tuesday 04 December 2012.
The ‘Applications of Geopolymers’ seminar was held at Ceram’s headquarters in Stoke-on-Trent and brought together existing UK and international expertise in this field, and showcased the latest technology.
Professor Josef Davidovits, who coined the term ‘geopolymers’ in the 1970’s, began the seminar with a review of the current status of geopolymer applications, and was followed by presentations from academics, materials suppliers and manufacturers on current and potential applications of geopolymers. The applications included: cement and concrete; traditional and high performance ceramics; precast and extruded building products; high temperature automotive parts; and composite mould tooling.
A workshop, the final part of the seminar, provided an opportunity for delegates to discuss the challenges and opportunities of geopolymer manufacturing across a range of industries.

*Geopolymerisation is a sustainable processing technology in the field of ceramics which offers the potential to harden/set products without the use of high firing temperatures.
