Bhushan Steel and Strips Awards Contract for CONARC Steel Making Plant

Bhushan Steel and Strips Ltd., New Delhi, India, have awarded SMS Demag AG, Germany, the contract for the supply of an electric steelmaking plant including a twin hot metal desulphurization plant, a CONARC furnace unit, two ladle furnaces and a RH vacuum degasser. The annual steel production capacity is planned to be approx. 1.95 million t.

The scope of supply includes engineering services, core components as well as dedusting plants, the electrical and automation equipment including Level 2 and erection and commissioning supervision.

The CONARC design concept combines the conventional BOF process with electric steel making in a single production unit which consists of two identical vessels.

The steelmaking process in a CONARC unit is consequently split up into two main phases which are the converter process to decarbonize the liquid hot metal by top lance injection of oxygen and the electric arc furnace process to melt down all cold charge materials, using electrical energy, and to superheat them up to tapping temperature.

SMS Demag has two CONARC reference plants: Saldanha Steel in South Africa and Ispat Industries at Dolvi, India. Commissioning of the steelmaking plant is scheduled for mid-2007.

Bhushan have also ordered from SMS Demag the supply of a slab caster plus down-stream hot rolling mill.

Among others, Bhushan Steel and Strips produce high-quality steel for the automobile industry and demanding pipe grades both for the Indian market and for export.

SMS Demag AG forms part of the Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology Business Area of the SMS group.
