EWI announced today that it has teamed with the Materials Science and Technology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to create innovative uses for new technologies in welding. The collaboration between the two entities will result in major advances in welding science and technology across many industrial sectors.
ORNL will provide computational models to be posted on EWI's website for use by EWI member companies. ORNL will also join the Navy Joining Center team led by EWI. As the collaboration matures, ORNL and EWI will identify other opportunities to apply their joint capabilities to improve advanced manufacturing in several industries, including fuel cells, advanced nuclear power, and automotive industries.
"EWI and ORNL are delivering precisely what US manufacturing needs - an understanding of applied technology underpinned by a knowledge of the fundamental sciences that will stimulate new ideas and accelerate time to market," said Henry Cialone, president and CEO of EWI. "EWI is well versed in what it takes to apply a technology in the real world so our customers can increase their ability to get the right products to market faster. ORNL has a long-standing tradition of excellence in materials science. Our goal is to develop methods and technologies that help our customers in all industries, including medical, aerospace, heavy manufacturing, pipeline, and energy."
"ORNL's computation al modeling capabilities are among the world's best and the Spallation Neutron Source is the foremost source of neutrons for materials research," said Stan David, ORNL Corporate Fellow and Leader of the lab's Materials Joining Group. "These new facilities will be crucial to the advancement of welding technology."
