ILVA S.p.A., Italy, has commissioned SMS Demag, Germany, with the supply of two hot-dip galvanizing lines for the works in Taranto and Cornigliano, Genoa. Both lines are to become operational in two years’ time.
The hot-dip galvanizing line at the Taranto works will process cold strip in the gages 0.7 to 2.0 mm as well as hot strip in the gages 1.5 to 4.0 mm. The strip widths range from 670 to 1,650 mm. The line is designed for an annual production of 650,000 t at a maximum process speed of 140 m/min.
The Cornigliano line produces galvanized cold strip in gages from 0.25 to 1.6 mm and widths between 800 and 1,650 mm. An annual production of 470,000 t will be generated at a maximum process speed of 180 m/min.
The galvanized strips in the grades CQ, DQ, DDQ, EDDQ and DP will be utilized primarily in the construction industry and for the manufacture of household appliances ("white ware").
SMS GmbH is the holding for a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering relating to the processing of steel, non-ferrous metals and plastics. The group is divided into the Business Areas of Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology, Tube, Long Product and Forging Technology and Plastics Technology. In the year 2005 some 9,250 employees worldwide generated a turnover of about EUR 2.33 bn.
Both lines are equipped with the newly developed, fully automated zinc ingot charging device, which helps to reduce the personnel required for continuously charging the zinc ingots into the galvanizing pot. Further major features of the mechanical supply scope are the entry and exit sections, uncoiler and recoiler, cleaning system, plating section with galvanizing pot and air-knife system, skin-pass mill stand, stretch-bending leveler and the post-treatment equipment with roller coating units.
At the request of ILVA, SMS Demag will provide space in both hot-dip galvanizing lines for the later installation of a second galvanizing pot.
In the exit section of the Taranto line, furthermore, provision has already been made in the basic layout for subsequently installing a trimming shear with edge scrap chopper and scrap removal system.
