A recent federal rule by the Environmental Protection Agency requires the power industry to determine the exact amount of mercury being emitted from their plants in order to comply with new regulations. A direct combustion method using a LECO AMA254 Mercury Analyzer with mercury-retaining sorbent trap proves to be a quick and simple method for determining mercury. This method requires no extraction and has limited sample handling. Trap material is homogenized and subsampled, allowing for a replicate analysis of each sample as well as enabling the possibility of saving retains of samples.
