Formula Students to Unveil Super Light Car, Hovercraft and Rocket

This year’s University of Hertfordshire’s Formula Student car will be unveiled next week along with a UH Formula 503 Hovercraft and a Level 3 Sky Streak Rocket.

The launch of ‘UH Projects’ developed by the University’s School of Automotive, Aerospace and Design Engineering (AADE) will take place at the University’s new Film and Media Building on Tuesday 12 June.

According to Formula Student team leader, Adam Kester and tutor, Dr Howard Ash, this year’s car is 25 kilogrammes lighter than last year’s and with its new powerful Yamaha R6 engine, will be a serious contender when it races at Silverstone on 12 July.

“Our car is super light and super strong and when we embarked on the design, we were aiming to win the competition and that is still the case,” said Adam.

“We have even made our wheel centres, steering rack and exhaust system to try and make our car as light as possible and have managed to create a car which will do 0-60 in 4 seconds and will out corner any other vehicle on the road,” Howard added.

Howard will also be unveiling the UH Formula 503 Hovercraft, a new light weight hovercraft developed by students from across AADE, which they plan to compete in the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain’s inland National Race series.

The new Level 3 Sky Streak Rocket, a 12.5ft long rocket, developed by Ray Wilkinson will also be launched and a full demonstration given.

“We are very proud of this rocket as it represents reaching level 3, the peak of rocketry achievements,” said Ray. “There are very few level 3 players out there; we are one of about 15 in the whole country.”

The launch ceremony will take place at the University of Hertfordshire’s New Film and Media Building, College Lane Campus, Hatfield, Hertfordshire AL10 9AB at 6pm on Tuesday 12 June.
