Xstrata to Cease production at Vantech Vanadium Plant

Xstrata will suspend production of vanadium from their Vantech vanadium plant, effective January 1, 2004, placing the plant into care and maintenance. This decision has been taken as the ore body being mined has reached the end of its natural life.

Continued production is possible if they decide to develop the Steelpoortdrift ore body. However, this has been deferred due to weakness in the vanadium price and the strength of the South African Rand.

The suspension of production will reduce annual production capacity of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) by 13.5 million pounds per year.
