It is possible to make liquids slide over a solid surface, similar to a bobsleigh on ice, as discovered in research conducted by physicists from Saarland University and the ESPCI in Paris. A coating applied at the boundary between the solid surface and the liquid induces the liquid to slide through. The sliding effect increases the liquid’s average flow velocity and its throughput.
Stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they are capable of becoming any cell type. They have potential to be treatments for diseases such as leukemia, diabetes, and age-related blindness. The challenge is to be able to sustain this versatility until it is needed.
UltraTech International have announced the selection of its new superhydrophobic fabric protection, EverShield, for the Material ConneXion library. The company is a leader in the environmental compliance sector, and in specialty fabric coatings market.
Renewable energy is produced from the winds out at sea by offshore wind farms. The saltiness in the air causes the wind turbines to rust. For these farms to be profitable, the turbines need to remain in action for 25 years at least, which would not possible without regular maintenance. A team of researchers from Fraunhofer have created a protective film, which will enhance the repair method. They are also looking to formulate an essential inspection criteria.
Dow Corning Corporation, a leader in silicon-based solutions for inks, paints, and coatings, have launched a new siloxane-based additive. Called Dow Corning® 108F Additive, it can be used for controlling foam in low-to-medium-PVC water-based inks and coatings.
INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials will present new nanoparticle inks, created using transparent, conductive oxides (TCOs), at the 2016 International Nanotechnology Exhibition and Conference (Nano Tech) in Tokyo, Japan. The nanoparticle inks are capable of providing cost-efficient, patterned, conductive, and transparent coatings for flexible touchscreens.
IHI Hauzer Techno Coating in The Netherlands is pleased to announce that it has acquired the intellectual property rights and trade marks for Cromatipic®, formerly owned by Sidasa Engineering in Spain. All responsibilities, ownership of process, technology and factory engineering have been included in this transaction and Hauzer will be supplier of consumables to all Cromatipic® users worldwide.
Researchers at the Penn State Materials Research Institute have discovered a novel material that is electrically conductive yet highly transparent. This new breakthrough can make smart windows, solar cells, touch screens, and large screen displays more efficient and affordable.
The 8th edition of AMI's Pipeline Coating Conference will take place at the Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen in Vienna, Austria from 16-18 February 2016.
