A*STAR's Institute of Microelectronics (IME) and Lumerical Solutions, Inc. (Lumerical), a global provider of photonic design software, today announced they have co -developed a calibrated compact model library (CML) for IME's silicon photonics platform and process design kit (PDK). The CML will help photonic integrated circuit (PIC) designers who use IME's silicon photonics process to improve the accuracy and reliability of their designs.
Monochromators are used to separate a broadband light source into a narrow wavelength band of interest; this is commonly achieved using a diffraction grating which can be rotated precisely through small angles. The simplicity of monochromators means that they are small, lightweight and portable. They are ideal for use in spectroscopy due to their narrow wavelength bands and ability to target specific lines.
A research team at MIT has created a new group of materials capable of emitting light of precisely controlled colours, including pure white light.
Fonon Corporation ('Fonon') is pleased to announce that Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has ordered the company's LaserTower Desktop marking and engraving system. SNC is a world-class prime systems integrator and electronic systems provider known for its rapid, innovative and agile technology solutions.
DVD material holds tremendous potential. This has been proven by an international research team, which has discovered that the material is suitable as a highly rapid light switch for data processing or optical communication.
Engineers and physicists at the University of Pennsylvania have discovered a new chiral property of silicon. They have demonstrated this property in a silicon-based photonic device that is sensitive to the spin of photons in laser light shone onto one of its electrodes.
A research team from the University of California, San Diego has demonstrated the trapping of light inside nanoscale granules of hexagonal boron nitride, a crystalline material that has fascinated researchers considerably. The team was led by physics professor, Michael Fogler.
PicoQuant GmbH has expanded the compatibility list of its FLIM and FCS upgrade kit to include the Zeiss LSM 880 confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The upgrade kit is an external addition to the CLSM enhancing its capabilities by the addition of time-resolved techniques such as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS), or advanced time-resolved Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) analysis.
Engineers at the University of California, San Diego have designed and developed a thin cloaking device that addresses some of the shortcomings faced in “invisibility cloaks.” This new device does not modify the light’s brightness surrounding a hidden object. The technology involved in this invisibility cloak device holds promise in optical communications to boost signal speed, and also for concentrating solar energy applications.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen will showcase a broad variety of laser technologies for lightweight construction at the LASER World of Photonics trade fair in Munich, Germany from June 22 to 25, 2015.
