Researchers Develop Dielectric Material-Based Thin Invisibility Cloak

Engineers at the University of California, San Diego have designed and developed a thin cloaking device that addresses some of the shortcomings faced in “invisibility cloaks.” This new device does not modify the light’s brightness surrounding a hidden object. The technology involved in this invisibility cloak device holds promise in optical communications to boost signal speed, and also for concentrating solar energy applications.

LASER World of Photonics: ROFIN to Debut 6kW Fiber-Coupled, High-Power Diode Laser

The Hamburg ROFIN macro group broadens its product range with a new series of fiber-coupled, high-power diode lasers for all industrial tasks such as hardening, brazing, soldering and coating. ROFIN will present the new DF 060 HP with an optical output power of 6 kW for the first time at the LASER World of Photonics in Munich, Germany from June 22 – 25, 2015.

Major Microscopy Companies Provide Practical Sessions at PicoQuant Time-Resolved Microscopy Course

For the first time, all five major microscopy companies joined PicoQuan'ts annual course on Time-resolved Microscopy. Besides the organizer PicoQuant, instructors of Leica, Nikon, Olympus, and Zeiss came to Berlin and provided practical sessions on their confocal microscopes.

Scientists Build Germanium-Tin Semiconductor Laser for Silicon Chips

Scientists belonging to the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland have collaborated with global partners to build a germanium-tin (GeSn) semiconductor laser for applications in silicon chips. This semiconductor is made up only of main group IV elements, and hence the GeSn laser can be applied onto silicon chips directly. A new method for data transmission using light on computer chips is offered by this semiconductor. The speed of data transfer is faster and requires only a fraction of the energy that is required when compared to data transmission through copper wires.
