The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded a contract to Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, Baltimore, Md. , for the design and construction of an energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly and sustainable administration building at NASA's Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va. The value of the contract is $22.4 million .
The design and construction are based on a Conceptual Level Design-Bridging package developed by AECOM of Arlington, Va. Whiting-Turner has retained the services of Cooper Carry , Alexandria, Va. , as their design consultant to complete the conceptual design developed by AECOM.
This project is the first in a modernization initiative called " New Town ." The 72,000 sq. ft. headquarters building will be constructed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. LEED recognizes achievements to advance building sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Construction is expected to start in summer 2009 with a planned completion date of spring 2011.
The "New Town" initiative includes five additional buildings and upgrades to two existing facilities over the next 15 years. In addition to modernizing the research campus, the project will reduce the Center's operations and maintenance costs.
NASA has partnered with GSA on this long-term modernization project to take advantage of their knowledge and expertise in designing and constructing federal buildings.
