TMS Turns to Social Networking Sites to Grow Membership

To further its mission to engage members and grow its global presence, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has joined three social networking sites.

TMS is now reaching out to the worldwide materials science and engineering communities through its society pages on LinkedIn, a professional network site; Flickr, a photo-sharing site; and the all-encompassing Facebook social network.

"TMS has been facilitating networking for nearly 140 years. It's central to what we do as a professional society of materials scientists and engineers. The social networking web sites of the world don't represent a change to this mission - only an exciting opportunity to expand it," said James Robinson, TMS chief operating executive.

The Society invites professionals from across the globe to connect and network through its new "fan" page on Facebook - TMS- The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. This social networking site allows fans (site members) to comment on Society postings or generate discussions of their own, and post photos, videos, or materials science-related information. The fan page offers up-to-date TMS news scrolls using a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, and features photos from TMS 2009, as well as videos from the 2009 Materials Camp for Teachers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Set up prior to the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Francisco, California, the Flickr photo sharing site offers a look into the premier global conference. The TMS Flickr site contains 380 photos organized in 11 photo sharing sets. Attendees are encouraged to continue uploading photos and videos from daily events, meetings, and the exhibit hall from any of the TMS-sponsored or co-sponsored conferences.

TMS reached out to the materials science and engineering professionals, and its colleagues by enhancing an existing LinkedIn group page established by a Society member last August. This networking page offers discussion groups, up-to-date TMS news via the RSS feed, and job postings. Currently, the social networking site has more than 440 members and numerous job postings and discussions.
