The TMK Group, Russia, has awarded to SMS Demag AG, Düsseldorf/ Germany, an order for the supply of two five-strand continuous bloom casters for the Seversky Tube Works (STW) near Yekaterinburg and for the Taganrog Metallurgical Works (Tagmet) near Rostov. The order value of the new facilities, including the modernization of the continuous caster at the Volzhsky works, comes to 45 million Euros.
The ingot casting units used hitherto will be completely replaced by the new continuous casters. This will result in lowered production costs and in higher quality of the round blooms. The construction of two identical facilities offers considerable synergies with regard to maintenance and spare-parts handling.
The supply scope for these identical facilities comprises the mechanical and hydraulic equipment for each five-strand bloom caster with the section sizes dia. 150 to 400 mm as well as the electrical and automation systems including Levels 1 and 2. The mould and oscillating area is to be equipped with a parabola mould, stirrers, and the resonance oscillator developed and patented by SMS Demag. The mould and oscillating area is designed such that square moulds of sizes 150 x 150 to 340 x 340 mm can also be utilized. Likewise included in the supply scope are torch-cutting and sample-cutting machines as well as a stamping machine.
The planned annual capacity is around 950,000 tons in each case. The commissioning of each facility is scheduled for the first and second halves of 2006 respectively. The works of the TMK Group manufacture tube steel grades for the oil and gas industry, a proportion of which is also intended for export.
