After a period of extensive modernization, the CAE (Chlorides, Amides, Esters) plant operated by LANXESS Deutschland GmbH at the Dormagen Chemical Park has now resumed chloroformate production. "The in excess of EUR 26 million that we have invested in the CAE plant in the last few years is paying dividends. It means we are now ideally equipped to supply our customers with standard products plus a wide range of specialties," said Dr. Uwe Westeppe, Head of Fine Marketing in the Fine Chemicals Business Unit.
In 2004 alone, LANXESS invested some EUR 4 million in rebuilding the chloroformate production facility in Dormagen. This involved, for example, the replacement of the previous glass apparatus by more rugged and more efficient steel/enamel systems. State-of-the-art process engineering also helps to manufacture many products more reliably than before.
But it is not only production that has benefited from this modernization project: Human and environmental safety has also been further enhanced. Another important factor was that the rebuilding work – which took place mainly between July and November 2004 – was organized in such a way that all customers were kept fully supplied the whole time.
Chloroformates are important starting products for many chemical syntheses – in the production of pharmaceuticals and crop protection products, for paper chemicals and in the plastics producing industry, for example. Aliphatic carbonates are of major importance as electrolyte fluids for high-performance batteries and as synthesis components.
