Airless Tire from New Tech Tire, a unit of Scitech Industries, has undergone a successful test in an Ohio-based industry laboratory.
The test showed that the non-pneumatic tire performed a smooth and uniform ride for 10 h at highway speed with a passenger load. The tire features internal ribs made of glass fiber composites and these ribs support the entire load of the vehicle. The Airless Tire was fixed on a rim using a conventional tire mounting tool. Building and curing of the tire was carried out in a steam-bladder mold installed at a commercial plant.
The Airless Tire offers several benefits to vehicle manufacturers and consumers. It saves weight and cost of the vehicle as it eliminates the need for jack, spares or tools. Tires can be developed on standard machines and can be easily mounted on standard rims. Only three rubber compounds is required for tire manufacturing and thus help reduce manufacturing cost as no expensive materials are involved.
The Airless Tire is a cost-saving product as it does not require calendared belts. It delivers superior fuel economy that is 2% or above. The most important benefit of the Airless Tire is it does not contain compressed air, punctures are avoided and retreading of the tire can be done many times. Scitech Industries is looking for industry partners to commercialize and distribute the new tire.
