IXYS, manufacturer of power semiconductors, high voltage integrated circuits microcontrollers and solid state relays for energy conservation, has signed an agreement with General Motors Components Holdings (GMCH) to fabricate power semiconductor wafers.
IXYS has developed its internal capabilities to create proprietary technologies. The company operates wafer fabrication facilities in the U.S., UK and Germany. The company has planned to enhance its wafer fab capabilities both internally and externally, as the demand for IXYS’ products is soaring.
The importance for power semiconductors is rapidly growing in transportation industry. The products have various applications, including electrical vehicles, hybrid vehicles, electric trains and cars. Hence, IXYS and GMCH have partnered to develop a commercial-scale power semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in the U.S.
The partnership provides opportunities for IXYS to enter the automotive market and to rapidly expand its power semiconductor production capacity. In addition, GMCH’s expertise will improve IXYS’ domestic supply chain and help serve global customers with high quality and low-cost US-made products.
