Bayer MaterialScience Launches New Grade of Medical Polycarbonate

Bayer MaterialScience, a provider of high-performance plastics and polymer materials, has introduced Makrolon 2258, a new grade of polycarbonate for the medical industry. The material was launched at the Medical Design & Manufacturing East conference.

The medical polycarbonate material has been engineered for molding devices that have long flow lengths of 150 mm and walls having thickness as low as 0.014”. The high-flow grade material allows OEMs and designers to use less amount of material for their devices. The material facilitates greater processing efficiency. The Makrolon 2258 also decreases the intrusiveness during medical procedures performed on patients.

The new polycarbonate will find use in medical devices that require complex components and thin walls, including needle safety guards and trocars. Bayer’s Makrolon 2258 can be subjected to steam and ethylene oxide sterilization at 121°C. The material meets numerous ISO 10993-1 biocompatibility tests specifications.
