New Partnership to Develop Industry’s Lightest and Most Durable Marine Closures Using Nanocomposites

Zyvex Technologies’ division, Zyvex Marine has collaborated with Pacific Coast Marine to fabricate long-lasting and lightweight marine closures such as doors and hatches utilizing nanocomposites.

Samples and components will be introduced at HiPer Craft 2012 Expo in Norfolk, Virginia. Through this collaboration, Pacific Coast Marine, a major provider of marine closures, can now offer products featuring advanced nano-enhanced carbon fiber materials to the marine market.

Zyvex Marine is a key player in the production of watercraft and components utilizing carbon nanotube-enhanced carbon fiber materials. Using these advanced materials, the company created a 54-ft, 8,000-lb boat named Piranha, which otherwise would have weighed 40,000 lb with conventional materials.

Pacific Coast Marine and Zyvex worked together during 2011 to develop closures, hatches and doors for Zyvex Marine’s watercraft. After realizing the market potential for lightweight hatches and doors on boats, the two companies are introducing a highly durable door that has 66% lesser weight than that of a conventional door. Arovex, a nano-enhanced carbon fiber technology from Zyvex Technologies, was used by Pacific Coast Marine. Arovex is a graphene and carbon nanotube engineered composite that employs the proprietary Kentera technology to form chemical bonds onto carbon nanotubes.

Pacific Coast Marine’s Sales and Project Manager, Brian Lamma stated that this collaboration enables the company to provide the industry’s most durable and lightest marine doors to its customers. The company’s products now offer a number of benefits such as longevity, fuel efficiency and safety.

Zyvex Marine’s General Manager, Byron Nutley stated that the company shifted from producing conventional aluminum-made boat doors to a scaled production process that uses nano-enhanced carbon fiber.
