During the opening ceremony of the European Society of Glass Science and Technology conference conducted on June 4, 2012, in Maastricht, Corning’s Dr John C. Mauro has earned the first SGT – Alastair Pilkington Early Career Award for his work on the development and expansion of computer simulation applications in many facets of glass science.
This Early Career award is aimed at encouraging creativity and excellence in glass related studies. The Society of Glass Technology and the Sir Alastair Pilkington’s family intend to present this award biennially.
Glass holds potential in several new applications, thanks to decreased weight and enhanced mechanical properties. Mauro attended the Alfred University and earned a B.A. in Computer Science, a B.S. in Glass Engineering Science and a Ph.D. in Glass Science. Mauro has been serving at the Modeling and Simulation department of Corning’s Science & Technology Division since 1999, and has carried out basic research in glass science, optical communication systems, photonics and biomaterials.
Corning develops stronger and more durable glasses to protect touchscreens under the name of Gorilla glass. Alastair Pilkington, twentieth century’s key glass technologist, invented the technique of creating flat glass by floating it on molten metal, and thus enabled the production of low-cost window glass. Pilkington received the Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1969 and was felicitated with knighthood in 1970.
