Murata Manufacturing, a manufacturer and global supplier of ceramic based passive electronic components, power supply and communication modules, has developed the smallest ever monolithic ceramic capacitor. Dubbed the 0201 < JIS >, the capacitor dimensions are 0.25 mm by 0.125 mm.
The new capacitor is characterized by a volume that is just 25% of the volume of the capacitor, 0402 < JIS > measuring 0.4 by 0.2 mm. the 0402 is the preferred monolithic ceramic capacitor of choice for use in smart phones. The new capacitor will be showcased by Murata at the CEATEC JAPAN 2012 exposition to be held on October 2.
Latest smart phones employ atleast 400 to 500 monolithic ceramic capacitors. In order to provide greater number of features in mobile devices, an increasing number of electronic components are being integrated in these devices. However, the size of mobile communication devices do not increase in proportion to the rise in number of features incorporated in them. This is the primary reason for volumetric efficiency to be considered as the critical factor in device design. This in turn fuels the demand for extremely small components that can facilitate the development of high-density circuits.
Ever since its inception in 1944, Murata Manufacturing has been engaged in the ceramic capacitor research and development. Murata launched the world’s first monolithic capacitors of 0402 < JIS > size in 2004 which manufacturers of high density mobile devices began to use extensively. The application of the 0402 < JIS > monolithic capacitors has now transitioned to the main module of smart phones.
