ProTek Transient Voltage Suppressor Components Deliver Advanced Circuit Protection for Smartphones

A new series of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) components from ProTek Devices™ deliver advanced circuit protection for smartphones, battery chargers and battery packs, and other popular portable consumer electronics devices.

Specifically, the PSDxxHP series provide electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrostatic overstress (EOS) and electrical fast transient (EFT) protection within a small footprint package. They are ideal to replace multilayer varistors (MLV 0805) for advanced circuit protection.

The PSDxxHP series consists of unidirectional 1,000 watt (8/20 micro amps wave shape) TVS devices that protect a single line. They deliver circuit protection for switching transients across the DC line in sensitive electronics. The PSD05HP is provided in a five volt configuration. The PSD12HP is 12 volts. The use of a molded JEDEC SOD-323 package configuration enables the PSDxxHP series to provide protection from ESD, EOS and EFT while saving space on the printed circuit board. Other applications include various wireless telecommunications devices and other such portable electronics.

The PSDxxHP series is also ideally suited for VCC bus protection. The devices exceed the requirements of IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) and IEC 61000-4-4 (EFT). They also meet the IEC 61000-4-5 (Surge) standard. The PSDxxHP series, in conjunction with passive components integrated into a TVS / filter network, can also be used for electromagnetic interference / radio frequency interference (EMI / RFI) protection. The devices all offer a low clamping voltage and are RoHS and REACH compliant.

Other key mechanical characteristics include an approximate weight of just five milligrams with lead-free pure-tin plating (annealed). The solder reflow temperature (pure-tin - Sn, 100) is 260-270 degrees Celsius. The parts carry a flammability rating of UL 94V-0.

These new devices are part of a family of 18 TVS components that provide design engineers the flexibility to place TVS components on the printed circuit board for each I/O port or voltage bus. Components from the family are provided to deliver single-line protection in a unidirectional configuration. In addition, other parts in the family support different watts, such as 400 or 500 watts, as well as different voltages, such as from 3.3 to 36 Volts.
