University of Manchester Invites Leading Researchers to Participate in Graphene Week 2015

The University of Manchester will be hosting the Graphene Week 2015 organized by the Graphene Flagship – a one billion euro research initiative. The initiative aims to bring all academic and industrial graphene researchers together to discuss the progress being made with the new material in the last decade, generating new opportunities, jobs and economic growth.

Hundreds of people will descend on Manchester for Graphene Week

The event will be attended by over 650 prominent researchers to discuss emerging applications, latest technology, research and science associated with graphene.

At the same time, the Graphene Industry Workshops 2015 will take place in the newly-opened National Graphene Institute, a chance for hundreds of businesses to learn about how they could benefit from the one-atom-thick material.

The Graphene Week 2015 will also conduct the following events:

  • A BBC World Service Forum will take place on 24 June, Wednesday in University Place
  • Sara Lowes' graphene musical composition created in association with Brighter Sounds, a creative organization, has produced a graphene inspired music piece to promote both women in musical composition and women in science. This is a 35-minute piece, named the ‘Graphene Suite’ which will be premiered at The University of Manchester on 25 June, Thursday in addition to performances for audiences at Old Trafford and Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI).
  • A three-day Experimental Weekender, a graphene exhibition will be conducted at MOSI from 26 - 28 June. The Friday Night Experiment will take place on Friday evening with performances from Circus House Manchester, a professional troupe of acrobatic performers having flexibility and core strength that personifies graphene's physical properties.
  • A temporary display of two graphene-related books taken from the John Rylands library collection at University Place. The collection include the first known reference of graphene, referring to a pencil, dated from the 16th Century and also one of the first references to Borrowdale graphite.
  • The event was officially inaugurated by Dr Cinzia Casiraghi, from The University of Manchester, who is also the Scientific Chair of the conference.

We are delighted to welcome the global research community to one of the top graphene research institutes in the world.

With an exceptional scientific programme, world-class invited speakers from both academia and industry, two parallel sessions for contributed oral presentations, daily poster sessions, awards, networking events, all in Manchester, I do believe that this conference will help advance graphene science and will promote cultivation of relationships, collaboration and friendships in the community.

Dr Cinzia Casiraghi, from The University of Manchester

Graphene Week 2015 is one of the most important events in the graphene calendar. The University is not only a leading centre for research but also for commercialization of graphene.

We felt this was a superb opportunity to invite SMEs and other businesses to the National Graphene Institute to find out what opportunities there might be for them to collaborate with our world-class researchers.

James Baker, Graphene Business Director
