Alcan and Republic of Ghana Sign JV for Potential Bauxite Mine and Alumina Refinery

Alcan has announced the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding (M.O.U.) with the Republic of Ghana for the creation of a joint venture between Alcan (51 percent) and Ghana (49 percent) to explore the feasibility of developing a bauxite mine and alumina refinery, with an initial capacity of 1.5-2 million tonnes per year.

Alcan and Ghana will immediately undertake a Preliminary Concept Study (PCS) to review the bauxite reserves, the logistics and pre-selection of the refinery area, including estimates of costs, and an analysis of social and environmental issues. This study is expected to be completed by early 2007, which, if successful, could then lead to feasibility studies. Specific milestones to meet these objectives, including timing regarding a decision to proceed with construction, would be agreed during the PCS.
