Piezo Inertia Drives from PI

This video shows the operation and features of PI’s Piezo Inertia Drives. PIShift drives in particular are ideal for drift-free long-term positioning. The piezo inertia drives are space-saving and affordable piezo-based drives, with comparatively high holding forces and a nearly limitless travel range. They utilize the stick-slip effect (inertia effect) – a cyclical alternation of static and sliding friction between the drive element and a runner produced by the piezo element – for a nonstop feed of the runner. The operating frequency of over 20 kHz enables the runner to be instantly driven at velocities in excess of 5 mm/second.

Features such as linear positioning stage with a width of 21 mm, rotation stage with a diameter of 14 mm, six-axis parallel kinematic; self-locking at rest, no heat generation; non-magnetic and vacuum-compatible operating principle; and optional integrated encoder with resolution of 1 nm (10 nrad) are included.
