It was a record first quarter for the DuPont R&D pipeline. For the first time in recent history, DuPont introduced more than 500 new products in three months. Even more significant is that the accomplishment was achieved in the middle of a global recession where major markets, including automotive and construction, were shrinking at record rates.
Still, the science behind DuPont drives forward. Now we are offering a behind-the-scenes look at the innovation behind this new record of product launches.
Sustainability was a common theme throughout these new products. From high performance coatings with improved environmental benefits to a new solar cell encapsulant for the solar energy market, the new products offered solutions to meet the needs for decreasing dependence on fossil fuels and protecting lives.
Also this year began with a record number of new products to address the global demand for more and better food. The Ag & Nutrition platform had more than 250 new products ready for sale during the 2009 planting season, including a new line of triple-stack hybrids for North America.
"I am proud of the science and technology engine that continues to deliver new products that help our customers grow," said Uma Chowdhry, senior vice president and chief science & technology officer. "For more than 200 years, DuPont has delivered high-value science, even during economic recessions. Tough times drive our scientists to be even more creative and they are delivering once again."
