Fuel Tech Receives FUEL CHEM Order from an Electric Utility Customer

Fuel Tech, Inc. (NASDAQ: FTEK), a world leader in advanced engineering solutions for the optimization of combustion systems and emissions control in utility and industrial applications, today announced receipt of a commercial FUEL CHEM® order from a new domestic electric utility customer.

Fuel Tech's proprietary TIFI® Targeted In-Furnace Injection™ technology will be installed on a medium coal-fired boiler with chemical injection scheduled to commence by early 2011.

Douglas G. Bailey, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “This unit was blending lower priced and lower quality Illinois Basin (ILB) coal with more expensive, but lower sulfur and higher quality, Central Appalachian and Columbian coals. In order to be more price competitive, as coal units often compete with lower-cost gas units, this utility was looking to burn 100% ILB coal without incurring the associated slagging issues and higher operating costs. Using our TIFI approach, we are confident that this customer will yield significant cost savings by enabling fuel flexibility while improving operating performance. We look forward to working closely with this customer and expect that additional opportunities will exist as utilities are increasingly attracted to the compelling economic benefits of shifting to the ILB or Powder River Basin coals.”
