First Solar to Build Thin-Film Photovoltaic Module Plant in Arizona

Provider of sustainable solar power solutions, First Solar is planning to construct a new thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules production facility in Mesa, Arizona.

The company will invest about $300 million in the facility, which will comprise four production lines with a total capacity to make nearly 250 MW of thin-film PV modules annually.

The PV module production facility will generate nearly 600 jobs. First Solar stated that its recently expanded plant in Perrysburg, Ohio and the proposed plant would expand its annual production capacity in the US by over 500 MW. The company plans to commence construction in the Q2 of 2011 and expects to complete it by next year. Shipments of the modules are slated to commence in the Q3 of 2012.

The PV module plant is situated on a land spanning 135 acres, which was previously a vehicle testing plant of General Motors. First Solar has planned future expansion at the facility, which will comprise a comprehensive ground-mounted PV testing facility and a 3 M rooftop solar deployment.
