Packaging specialist, Sealed Air has announced that 60% of its international manufacturing facilities have reached zero percent waste-to-landfill objectives in 2010.
This achievement represents another milestone in the company’s SmartLife sustainability initiatives. The zero waste was obtained in plastic raw material.
Sealed Air’s Global Recycling Director, Vince Herran stated that over 95% of the company’s plastic raw materials are utilized for manufacturing sealable products. The company has achieved this milestone by implementing several programs across its worldwide supply chain network, which discovers the beneficial applications of waste material and improves the yield. It has been seen that the global programs have increased Sealed Air’s capability to reuse its own products and recycle them into useful products.
Ron Cotterman, Sealed Air’s Executive Director of Sustainability, explained that the SmartLife zero waste-to-landfill initiative has been launched to understand and enhance the environmental benefits of the company’s products. The company assesses the entire life cycle of a product, starting from material use to waste generation.
Sealed Air is creating several programs to identify more number of scrap material applications, including recycled materials in construction and railroad ties to progress towards sustainability goal.
