Bayer MaterialScience Plans to Invest $120 Million in Texas Plant

Bayer MaterialScience has planned to invest approximately US $120 million in its plant located in Baytown, Texas. This signifies the company’s progress towards global manufacturing strategy.

The investment includes reliability enhancements, environmental upgrades and debottlenecking of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Bayer MaterialScience also focuses on quality and reliability enhancements of polycarbonate material. In addition, the investment will enhance the process technology for toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and improve reliability and energy efficiency, which in turn will lead to higher productivity. Bayer MaterialScience has planned for further investments to enhance the total infrastructure of its largest facility in the U.S.

Various applications of polycarbonate include optical data storage devices, shatter-resistant optical lenses, automotive headlamp lenses and medical devices. The more flexible chemicals, TDI and MDI, are used for producing polyurethanes that are used in flexible, spray and rigid foams in the construction, automotive and furniture industries.

Bayer MaterialScience’s President and CEO, Greg Babe stated that the investments will support the company‘s growth in the NAFTA region.
