The M&G Group has planned to construct new polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plants in the U.S. PET, a thermoplastic polymer resin, is used for packaging a number of products such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, fresh and frozen food products and soft drinks. PTA is the key component in PET production.
The new PET manufacturing facility employs the company’s EasyUp SSP technology. The plant will have a capacity to produce 1,000 kt per annum. The PTA plant will produce 1,200 kt per year and will be one of the world’s largest facilities. The company is evaluating two technologies for the PTA unit.
The proprietary PET technology will enable the company to construct the new plants, which will be four times bigger than the plants constructed with commercial technologies. The integration and flexibility of M&G’s assets will help the company to serve the industry in a cost-effective way at both local and international levels.
Site selection for the new facilities is on-going and final selection will be announced by June end. Construction time is projected as 30 months.
