Celanese Speeds Up Industrial Ethanol Production Schedule in China

A worldwide technology specialist in chemical products and specialty materials, Celanese announced that it will speed up its earlier plan to start ethanol production in China.

The company has also planned to upgrade its existing acetyl plant located at the Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park. The modifications will be carried out with Celanese’s TCX advanced technology, which will increase the ethanol production capacity by nearly 200,000 tons. The TCX technology integrates acetyl platform along with enhanced manufacturing technology for producing ethanol from feedstocks sourced from hydrocarbons.

In addition, Celanese has started the construction of a technology development unit in Clear Lake, Texas. This unit will be used for ethanol production and is expected to commence operation by mid-2012. The company also plans to establish a new R&D unit at its site in Clear Lake and this facility will help enhance its TCX and acetyl technologies.

Celanese will begin industrial ethanol production much earlier than previously announced to meet the growing demand in China. The company continues to step up its earlier announced greenfield alternatives to achieve a leading position in the acetyl and ethanol markets.
