Ube Industries has signed a joint venture (JV) agreement with Dow Chemical to manufacture and distribute formulated electrolytes for use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).
The new company, called Advanced Electrolyte Technologies, is a 50-50 JV; its regulatory approval is still pending and is anticipated to be completed by this year.
The JV represents Dow’s dedication to develop novel material science technologies to resolve major challenges, including the global need for clean energy products. In addition, the JV supports the growth policy of Dow’s Energy Materials unit with the addition of formulated electrolytes to the product series. The products help in meeting the battery performance requirements of the growing energy storage industry.
Ube will be able to reinforce its worldwide supply network and enhance the cost competitiveness of its formulated electrolyte technology at the international market.
Advanced Electrolyte Technologies will integrate Ube’s proficiency in electrolyte technology and Dow’s expertise in material science and global footprint. This integration will offer major growth opportunities for both the companies.
The first manufacturing plant of Advanced Electrolyte Technologies is anticipated to be constructed at Dow’s Michigan site and operations will begin in 2012.
