Spirit AeroSystems, an Oklahoma-based company and a provider of commercial airplane components and assemblies, has given a $23 million contract to General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products to manufacture winglets for use in commercial business-jet aircraft.
The composite winglets will be manufactured by General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products and will be supplied to Spirit AeroSystems. These composite winglets will be assembled on the wings. General Dynamics will immediately commence the manufacturing of winglets at the Marion, Va., unit and will start supplying the products in the Q3 of 2012.
According to Jim Losse, who serves as the General Manager and Vice President of the advanced materials operation of General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, the contract for manufacturing winglets emphasizes the company’s experience in aerostructures and its capability in producing advanced composite products for the clients in the commercial aerospace market.
Sophisticated radomes and composite structures are designed and produced through the company’s advanced materials operation for select commercial aerospace clients and for different kinds of military aircraft. The company employs around 450 people at the Marion facility.
General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products provides armament systems and weapons with high-performance, composite products for ground systems and aircrafts, survivability systems for warfare vehicles, off-road heavy-duty suspension and axle systems to the allied forces, US military and select commercial clients.
