Nanocomp Opens New Facility in New Hampshire to Meet Demand for Carbon Nanotube Products

Nanocomp Technologies, a manufacturer of carbon nanotube-based component products and performance materials, has opened its new headquarters in Merrimack, New Hampshire, marking the conclusion of the first phase of a proposed expansion of 100,000 sq. ft, based in part on funding from the Defense Production Act Title III.

The new facility produces strong, high-performance and conductive carbon nanotube-based products at a record scale for customers such as NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense, and several key commercial companies.

Carbon nanotube commercialization resulted in meaningful developments across various industries and drew the interest of the Department of Defense, which has nominated Nanocomp Technologies’ materials as ‘critical for national defense.’ It also attracted the attention of DuPont, who inked a financial and strategic development alliance with Nanocomp Technologies earlier in 2012.

Over the coming year, Nanocomp Technologies plans to expand its employment base by adding more than 50 production, technical, marketing, and sales positions at its technology research center situated in Concord, New Hampshire as well as at its Merrimack headquarters.

With the expansion of production capacity, Nanocomp Technologies’ carbon nanotube sheet, wire and tape products can now address a wide variety of application categories as follows:

  • Multi-functional materials such as a smart phone case that is light and strong and features an embedded antenna concurrently serving as an electro-magnetic interference (EMI) shield as well as a thermal/electrical backplane; and a carbon nanotube-based airplane wing featuring an exterior layer that de-ices and controls LSP
  • Thermal management materials such as fire retardant materials; de-icing for aerospace; thermal transfer solutions for aviation and space; and heaters (Joule) for aerospace and automotive
  • Electrically conductive materials to be used as non-metallic electrodes for lithium and other batteries; shielding for EMI; and lightweight substitute for copper wires
  • Structural materials to provide superior performance armor protection for police and military forces; for automotive and consumer electronics applications; and to make structural components that lower vibration and weight in aerospace
