The new Flare, a compact, pulsed laser from Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR), provides a superior and cost-effective alternative to older gas lasers and first-generation solid-state lasers for life sciences and instrumentation applications.
The Flare series has three wavelength versions available - near infrared (1064 nm), green (532 nm) and ultraviolet (355 nm). The UV model is ideal for MALDI-TOF applications currently serviced by legacy nitrogen lasers, as well as for many laser microdissection applications. Specifically Flare’s shorter pulsewidth (< 2 ns versus 4 ns for the N2 laser) translates directly into superior time of flight (ToF) resolution. Its higher pulse repetition frequency of 1 kHz (versus <100 Hz for a N2 laser) reduces data acquisition times by an order of magnitude. Moreover, Flare’s sealed industrial package minimizes service requirements, providing superior reliability and reduced cost of ownership.
The Flare series comes to Coherent as a result of its acquisition of Innolight and becomes part of Coherent’s growing family of short-pulse diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers. It is cost and performance-optimized for life sciences and instrumentation applications in terms of its long lifetime, output power and beam quality. For example, the Flare at 355 nm, delivers a TEM00 output mode of M2 <2 and a pulse energy of 30 microjoules.
