Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) has been awarded two major orders with a value of nearly half a billion euros by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa). Qatar’s state power supply company has commissioned Siemens to deliver 14 turnkey substations and to expand and modernize three others as part of a 290 million euro project to expand the power supply system. Kahramaa has also placed a second order with Siemens worth around 180 million euros to deliver most of the electrical power supply system for the “Westbay” infrastructure project in Qatar. Both projects are supposed to be finished by mid-2007.
“There are highly challenging infrastructure projects in which a wide assortment of our range of products and systems will be deployed. They are also highly demanding in terms of project management since several systems will have to be constructed in parallel within a very short time,” said Dr. Udo Niehage, President of the Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution Group (PTD).
In addition to the delivery of the substations for the infrastructure project “Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion – Phase VI,” the 290 million euro order placed by Kahramaa with Siemens also involves the laying of high voltage cables with a total length of over 340 kilometers (210 miles). The stations are to be built in and around the Qatar capital, Doha.
In the new Westbay precinct of Doha currently under development, 200 new high-rise buildings are to be constructed over the next two years and will require a suitable electrical power supply. Most of this power requirement will be covered by three turnkey substations from Siemens, which are included in the delivery for the 180 million euro order.
