Using ultrasonic waves to control microbial levels in industrial water supplies earned Drew Industrial, a business group of Ashland Specialty Chemical, a division of Ashland Inc., the 2005 Vaaler Award presented by Chemical Processing magazine. Ashland’s SONOXIDE ultrasonic water treatment system was judged a major contribution toward more effective and efficient plant operations in the chemical industry. Ballots were cast by members of Chemical Processing magazine’s editorial board, comprised of technical professionals from a variety of scientific disciplines.
Ashland ’s SONOXIDE system uses a patented, non-chemical method to control microbial growth, preventing fouling and contamination. Water passes through the SONOXIDE system chamber, where bacterial cells are exposed to low-power, high-frequency ultrasonic energy. This energy causes a series of fatal alterations within cells, resulting in cell death. Ultrasonic energy (sound waves beyond the range of human hearing) is a safe, proven technology to control microbial growth and is used in the pharmaceutical and health care industries.
According to Len Gelosa, senior vice president, Ashland Specialty Chemical, Water Technologies, “Being one of only three companies to receive the prestigious Vaaler Award this year reflects the innovation behind this unique technology. Our investment in SONOXIDE water treatment technology demonstrates Ashland’s overall strategy to continuously improve our products and services and to provide both high performance and environmentally responsible solutions for our customers.”
