TransGas Starts Construction of Coal-to-Gasoline Plant in West Virginia

TransGas Development Systems has celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of the largest Coal-to-Gasoline facility in America.

The new Adams Fork Energy facility will be constructed in Mingo County, West Virginia. It will convert local coal into high grade, clean gasoline and will have a capacity to produce 18,000 barrels of gasoline per day.

The Adams Fork Energy plant will be based on the PRENFLO PDQ gasification technology of Uhde Corporation of America, a division of ThyssenKrupp group and a business associate of Uhde, a specialist in coal gasification.

Uhde sees a major boost in the demand for coal-based energy projects. The Adams Fork Energy facility will help reduce dependence on oil sector and create a new market for coal-derived fuels. Coal gasification plants provide various benefits, including low emissions and higher efficiency. They enable the use of low-grade feedstocks like biomass, coal and petcoke. The PRENFLO technology features proprietary Koppers-Totzek coal gasification process from Uhde.

TransGas’ coal-to-gasoline complex will be the first US facility to secure the license for Uhde’s PRENFLO gasification process application. The Adams Fork Energy complex will include a methanol-to-gasoline technology, coal gasification, coal preparation, methanol synthesis and gas cleaning. Construction is expected to be finished by 2015.
