BASF Ventures into Electrolytes Business

BASF has announced that it is venturing into the electrolytes business for lithium-ion batteries (LIB).

The inclusion of electrolytes in its present range for the LIB industry will allow the company to supply yet another important constituent needed for the battery technology. The company also unveiled its plans to form a worldwide electrolytes group in its Intermediates segment to meet this purpose.

Electrolytes are produced using complex preparations and are vital for carrying electronic charge in batteries. Quality electrolytes are needed to improve the performance of a battery. BASF has already commenced the process of developing exclusive formulations for premium type of electrolytes founded on organic carbonates for automotive and battery industry clients. The commercial versions of its products are anticipated to be supplied at the end of 2011.

According to Dr. Andreas Kreimeyer, BASF’s Research Executive Director and Member of the Board of Executive Directors, the company plans to enter into the electrolytes business primarily to support the clients in the electro mobility business. He added that the company is looking forward to perform the role of a system supplier to offer tailor-made solutions to its clients.
