Making EDS Quantification with Standards an Everyday Technique Using FSQ in APEX

The latest APEX software from EDAX offers enhanced flexibility for energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. While the eZAF model accounts for matrix effects, PeBaZAF is ideal for geometrically complex materials, utilizing the peak-to-background ratio. Standardless normalized quantification remains the most popular method due to its simplicity, fast results, and minimal requirements. However, since this method involves an underdefined equation system, normalizing element weight fractions is necessary.

This webinar introduces how APEX simplifies this process with the "reference" feature. By performing a short measurement of a single-element standard, a unique scaling value is determined to account for unknown physical parameters, enabling non-normalized results. When a standard is measured, its reference value is applied to the spectrum, accounting for differences relative to the sample measurement. This reduces the complexity of the quantification process and facilitates the creation and use of a reference database. Additionally, the software includes an algorithm for standard selection, further streamlining the process.
