Advanced GC-MS Platform for Analyzing Complex Samples

This webinar examines a new, redesigned, high-resolution time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. It combines a new TOF analyzer with integrated software that uses all available information to identify compounds in complex mixtures.

This innovative GC-MS system has excellent resolving power (R > 30,000), mass precision (< 1 ppm), and various ionization techniques.

These include classical electron ionization (EI), three types of soft ionization (CI, PI, and FI), and a combination of EI/FI/FD and EI/PI ion sources. The device includes innovative data analysis software employing high-resolution MS, EI, and soft ionization methods to automatically identify analytes in complicated combinations.

The software workflow begins with chromatographic peak deconvolution, followed by database matching, elemental composition determination for the molecular ion, isotope pattern matching, and EI fragment accurate mass analysis to identify the most likely candidates for compounds registered in databases.

This information can also help identify chemicals that are not in the database. Numerous materials will be examined to demonstrate the efficacy of combining our new high-performance GC-MS with our new automated qualitative analysis software.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Acquiring knowledge of a new GC-HRMS system
  • Exploring an automated process for data analysis
  • Using EI and soft ionizing with HRMS to simplify the qualitative analysis
